In Kerala, a lungi is commonly called a mundu. This rectangular cotton garment is wrapped around the waist, much like a sarong, and is a traditional everyday outfit for men across the state.
The Mundu in Kerala Culture
The mundu holds a special place in Kerala’s lifestyle and Malayalam culture. Woven from lightweight cotton, it suits the warm, humid climate and allows easy movement whether at home, in the fields, or in local markets. You will hear the word “mundu” frequently in Malayalam conversations when people refer to daily clothing, just as the term “lungi” is used in other parts of India.
Design and Regional Variations
A typical mundu measures about two to two-and-a-half meters in length and is worn by tucking or folding it at the waist. Most are white or dark colors with a narrow colored border known in Malayalam as the kara. During festivals and weddings, men often wear a special version called kasavu mundu, which has a decorative golden border and is considered formal attire.
Difference from Dhoti and Lungi
Although the mundu resembles the dhoti or lungi worn in Tamil Nadu and other South Indian states, Keralites maintain a distinct style. The everyday mundu is simpler than the ceremonial veshti, and unlike the brightly patterned lungis found elsewhere, Kerala’s version favors plain fabrics with subtle detailing. Despite these variations, all belong to the larger tradition of South Indian wraparound garments.
